Wrapping up the exciting 12th edition of the Durban Surf Carnival!

The Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel at New Pier on Durban’s Golden Mile came to an exciting close this past weekend. This multi-disciplined three day surfing event, which is in its 12th year and third year in Durban, drew great crowds who enjoyed the warm sun, beautiful sea and exciting surf action throughout!

World class events that included the Longboarding, Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP) and Retro Surfing brought in prizes worth over R200 000.

Paul Godwin, the Event Organiser from Nerve Events, thanked major sponsors of the event - the City of Durban, Jeep Apparel, The Independent on Saturday, Gooderson Leisure Hospitality Group, as well as supporting sponsors, contestants and the public for making the Durban Surf Carnival a major success.
Stand up Paddle events included the SUPSA sanctioned Open Men and Women’s divisions as well as the Juniors and legends division (over 45). The winners of the Open, Men and Women’s divisions will be eligible for squad selection to represent South Africa at the 2015 ISA Stand Up Paddle World Championship.
The SUP final was won by Justin Bing (CPT) who scored a heat total of 15 and Brandon Ribbink (KZN) in second place. Joining them were Western Province surfers, Ethan Koopmans and Thomas King who placed third and fourth respectively.

Bing said that he was “stoked” at his win after having competed in three finals back to back. “Even though I am tired from the events, I am extremely proud of myself and happy with my results,” he added.

The Ladies SUP Final was won by Tarryn Kyte (CPT), second place went to Roxy Davis (CPT) with Tammy Robarts (BOL) and Penny Stemmet (BOL) in third and fourth respectively.

The SUP Junior division was hotly contested with first prize going to 17 year old Ethan Koopmans (CPT) with fellow Capetonian’s, Kimon Dos Santos in second, Joshua Roberson placing third and Matt Maxwell in fourth place.

The KZN Longboard Open Championships, sanctioned by the KwaZulu Natal Longboard Surfing Association (KZNLSA) was won by Brad Weare (KZN) who scored 14 overall with Justin Bing (CPT) in second place, Gareth Jones (KZN) in third and Damien Stander (KZN) in fourth.

Weare was delighted to have taken the win after having had a two year break from competing. “I am overwhelmed and excited to have taken first place in this event. It was really great to get back into competitive surfing and this was a great spot to have held this event,” he said.

In the Ladies Longboard event, Tarryn Kyte (CPT) took the win which some impressive surfing, she was followed by Nix Bez (KZN) in second, Christy Gilmour (KZN) in third and Tracy Phillips (KZN) in fourth.

For Kyte, surfing in these events was “amazing”. “I am stoked to have won two events, this one as well as the SUP Ladies. Not only am I happy about taking the win on this one, but also for the SUP event, as this is one of the qualifying contests for the World games,” she said.

The over 50 longboard final saw some great surfing from Hugh Thompson who took the win with some top class surfing. Hot on his heels in second place was Craig Daniel (KZN), Deon Bing (CPT) in third and Paul O’Connell (CPT) in fourth.

The much anticipated event of this year’s Durban Surf Carnival was the Retro Surfing Division, which was held for the second timeRequirements of this event saw surfers having to ride a single-fin surfboard which generally falls into the sub 7’0” category. Here, Justin Maisch (SKZN) was unstoppable once again, pulling off the traditional maneuvers that were reminiscent of surfing in the seventies. He was followed by Justin Bing (CPT) in second, Ethan Pentz (CPT) in third and Damien Stander (KZN) in fourth.

To wrap up the event in total, Contest Director, Ann Wright commented, said, “This year, the competition as usual has been a great success with 168 competitors participating from around the country. The weather has also been excellent and even though the waves that started off on Friday were small 2-foot offshore conditions they landed up as 3-4 foot onshore conditions, but very contestable with the guys producing some huge scores in the excellent range. We have had three long days with the promenade being full of spectators showing support and making this a thriving event once again”.

South African U16 Longboard Champion Sam Christianson of Durban will be competing amongst SA’s Top Open Longboarders at this year’s Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel this weekend at the New Pier Beach situated on Durban’s Golden Mile.

This weekend is the 12th edition of the Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel it is the veritable who’s who of South African Longboard and SUP surfers that will be descending on Durban’s World Class surf break, New Pier.

The Longboarding Open division is going to be hugely contested this year with numerous former SA Longboard champs and carnival winners taking the stage with popular names like Justin Bing (WP), Thomas King (WP), Brad Weare (KZN) Rat Mundy (KZN) and rising junior star Sam Christianson (KZN) who was recently crowned U16 Junior SA Champ, to name a few, who will be taking nothing away from the other divisions who are peppered with surfing longboard aficionados from around the country.

The Ladies longboard division has also drawn huge interest with Bernie Shelly (WP) bringing a whole troupe of ladies up from Cape Town to participate, which will see SA Champions and previous carnival champions in the surf. Names to look out for here will be defending champ Heather Klug (KZN) , Nix Bex (KZN) and Cape Townians Tarryn Kyte and Roxy Davis, to name a few.

The Forgotten Soul Retro Surfing event is also going to be a showdown with defending Champ Justin Maisch, a favourite for this event, up against top surfers like Die Hard surfer Deon Bing duelling against his son Justin.  The only lady entry into this event, Teal Hogg (KZN), is ready to show the men what she has got and relishes knocking the guys out one by one.

The SUPSA Champs is once again going to be hotly contested in all the divisions with favourites in the opens being Defending champs Brandon Ribbink (KZN) and Justin Bing (WP) - both surfers along with Tarryn Kyte (WP) have just returned from the ISA world games in Nicaragua where SA achieved a respectable 7th place out of 27 Teams.

This year the surf carnival also features the NAISH SUPSA Racing for the first time and, as predicted, has attracted racers from all over South Africa with Ethan Koopmans and Mishka Steyn from the WP heading a pack of SA’s top racers.

Paul Godwin the event organiser from Nerve Events said, “This year’s Carnival has attracted over 160 entries, the biggest field in this event 12 year history and Durban in June has splendid warm waters and usually mellow surf which is perfect for these disciplines and surfers”. LEARN TO SURF AT THE 2014 DURBAN SURF CARNIVAL

Durban’s New Pier Beach will be a place to “hang 10” with surfers from all around the country, gearing up for the 12th annual Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel on June 6-8.

This event, sanctioned by the Stand Up Paddleboard Association of South Africa (SUPSA) and KwaZulu Natal Longboard Surfing Association (KZNLSA) will host a number of surfing disciplines

This year will also include SUP Course Racing which is a new discipline to the event. Naish SUP is one of the leading SUP brands in the world and has been supporting the Durban Surf Carnival since its inception.

There will be two SUP racing events at the carnival, the first will be a distance race of 8-10km around a couple of cans (buoy markers) set out the back off Durban’s main beach front. The start and finish is set from the middle of the beach near New Pier (waves permitting), or alternatively from Vetchies Beach with the race estimated to last around 1 hour.  The second race event will be a technical short-course of 2-3km where the paddlers will have to negotiate the surf-breakers going in and out several times around a set course from the beach to just behind the breaking waves. This race will consist of qualifying rounds leading up to a final - each race typically takes 10-15minutes.

Peter Petersen from Naish said, “SUP racing combines surfing skills with strength and stamina and is a great cross-training tool for a lot of surfers and SUP surfers. Hence we'll see a lot of the entrants in the surfing events also entering the SUP racing section”. He also added that this is a great opportunity to showcase their products and continue building their strong brand in the local market.

Should you wish to learn how to be the next “surfing sensation” the LEARN 2 SURF surfing school will be hosting free surfing clinics at the Durban Surf Carnival. LEARN 2 SURF have schools all over South Africa. Shaun Sellman from the Durban office said, “Our surf schools offer either group lessons or private coaching for you to learn to surf or improve your surfing skills and we also provide all the necessary equipment”. Sellman and his team are looking forward to passing on their skills to all the visitors who attend this year’s Surf Carnival.  He also added that it is never too late to learn new skills in your life and encourages all age groups to learn how to surf.

The Durban Surf Carnival is free to the public to watch with a free SNAP SHOT Photographic Competition which is open to all to enter!

SUPSA is endorsing both the surfing and racing portion of the SUP events with the results counting towards the 2014 overall national ranking and will be used as a selection tool for the ISA World Championships.
All entries close for participants today (Saturday, May 31st). For enquiries call Paul Godwin 0835601185 or email mw.nerve@mweb.co.za <mw.nerve@mweb.co.za> . Surf Carnival heating up

Surfers from all around the country will be heading to Durban’s Golden Mile New Pier Beach for the 12th annual Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel on June 6-8.

With a number of sponsors lending their support to this annual event that draws crowd’s young and old from around the country; one such sponsor, Natural Curve Surfboards, will introduce an “experimental design” to one of the winner’s prize.

Hugh Thompson, owner of Natural Curve Surfboards, said it all started with a client of his from Cape Town who made him aware of the research that was being done in Australia regarding shark attacks on bathers and surfers and wanted him to base his design on that research. Basically, the stripes on surfboards act as a potential deterrent and causes optical distortion to the shark’s vision. Thompson added, “even though this research is still under development and is experimental, if it helps to lessen any attacks, I am all for it!”

Self Defence demos at The Durban Surf Carnival presented by Jeep Apparel

Another activity for the general public to participate will be Self Defence demonstrations by Fem-Defence.

Zanie and her Team will be at the event and we encourage all women to pop in to the event and check this out

As women living in South Africa, it extremely important that we are able to defend ourselves against violent crime. Just look at the statistics, they will frighten you and sadly each and every one of us knows at least 1 person that has been affected by violent crimes. We at Fem Defence are dedicated to offering self defence classes that are purely based on being able to defend yourself and get away from your attacker. The majority of self defence classes are based heavily on martial arts and run by men.  Most women are not interested in becoming the next Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris, we want to feel comfortable and to learn easy non-complicated moves to be able to defend ourselves in real life situations.  Our program has been developed for women and our instructors are women. Our classes are based on real life scenarios, guidance and advice. We have analysed how, when and where most women are attacked and in doing so our program is easy to learn. Our classes are filled with fun, fitness and most importantly learning how you can best defend yourself in most situations.” States Zanie Cawood of Fem Defence

There will be daily Self Defence demonstrations at the Durban Surf Carnival at 10am, 12pm and 2pm on all three days.
